FAQs

Why do I need to optimise my website?

If your site is not properly optimised for search engines, your site will not rank well.

Does Elemental Creative guarantee top ten ranking?
We only guarantee that we will optimise and promote your website to the best of our abilities. Our previous Search engine optimisation work has always been successful but we cannot guarantee exact placement in any given search engine.

How long do search engines take to include submitted pages into their search results?
Search engines are notorious for taking a long time to index webpages. Some will include paid for pages within one week - others can take up to 6 months. The general time span is between 6 weeks to 3 months.

What are keywords and how important are they in search engine promotion?
'Keywords' are search phrases that a user may enter in a search engine to find out information, a product or a service. For example, someone who wants to find a site that sells silver jewellery might enter 'silver jewellery' in a search engine. There are many different combinations of keyword phrases, which users could enter (for example, 'silver necklace', or 'silver earrings'). Collecting these keywords into a list forms the basis of a search engine promotion campaign.

Keywords must be properly researched, as well as specific. For example, using 'jewellery' as a keyword is too vague and generic and will not result in any real traffic. Research shows that users are generally becoming more specific with the keywords they enter (for example, 'silver celtic earrings').

Why do some websites rank higher than others in search engine results?
Search engines use very complex algorithms to determine in ranking websites, such as metatags, website content and link popularity.

What is Pay-Per-Click advertising?
In a PPC agreement, the advertiser only pays for clicks to the destination site based on a prearranged per-click rate. This is the only way to guarantee placement. The major Pay-Per-Click search engines are Overture and Espotting.

What's the difference between a directory and a search engine?
Directories (such as Yahooand DMOZ) use human editors to compile lists of web sites, which are presented in a categorised format. Search engines (such as Google) are databases of pages that are automatically collected from throughout the web by 'spiders' and automatically processed.

Should I use software that says it will submit my website to 30,000 search engines?
Firstly, there are not 30, 000 search engines worth their salt out there. There are approximately 6-8 quality search engines that are used by over 95% of web users. Secondly, whilst this software will submit your site to thousands of search engines, FFA's and linkfarms, the software will not optimise your site for individual search engines or help you achieve good rankings.

What techniques are considered bad practice?
  1. Hidden text or text very similar to the page background colour;
  2. Indiscriminate linking, this is very widespread;
  3. Javascript that hides a HTML page, which carries the optimised code;
  4. Meta refresh, pages that automatically refresh to another page are very bad practice;
  5. Small font text;
  6. Using too many keywords and placing them in the wrong position will get you handicapped, due to different search engine requirements.
