The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) and it's Importance

"The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an industry consortium which seeks to promote standards for the evolution of the Web by producing specifications and reference software."

The W3C has been set up to define what industry standards should be across the web.

The most widely accepted guidelines in regards to accessibility on the web are those agreed by the W3C and these guidelines have gained support throughout the entire world.

What are the W3C guidelines?

The guidelines, which are known as the WAI guidelines (Web Accessibility Initiative), provide a set of well defined and prioritised checkpoints that must be met if a website is to become accessible.

The guidelines are divided in to what are known as priorities. Each priority contains a number of checkpoints that must be met to ensure that the site passes that level of accessibility.
