The Business Challenge

Since October 2004 to present day, Elemental Creative Ltd, has carried out accessibility consultancy services on new O2 UK applications- including a media messaging application and a text messaging service.

Elemental Creative Ltd worked in conjunction with the O2 testing team to ensure that new applications were accessible and met WAI W3C WCAG 1.0 guidelines. Elemental Creative Ltd also helped to develop and write the O2 testing team’s internal strategy for accessibility testing.

The Business Solution

To ensure each application was as accessible as possible, a testing environment was created, so that each application could be tested under different browsers, platforms, conditions and with assistive technology.

Elemental Creative Ltd manually tested each O2 application against the following standards to identify barriers to access:

• W3C / WCAG / WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
• RNIB See it Right Accessible Website Guidelines
• 1995 Disabilities Discrimination Act UK
• O2 internal Accessibility guidelines

Project Deliverables

• Creation of O2 internal strategy document and guidelines for accessibility testing
• In-depth expert manual accessibility evaluation of each O2 application;
• Review of current provision against WAI W3C WCAG 1.0 guidelines and the internal O2 Accessibility policy;
• Each screen within each application was manually tested through a sequence of approx 90 test cases based on the WAI Accessibility guidelines and the O2 internal Accessibility guidelines;

• Provision of a detailed report in plain language, presenting findings & recommendations including –
• Web accessibility evaluation;
• All defects that were uncovered;
• Recommendations & timescales on how to fix all defects flagged;

Each application was tested in the test environment thoroughly and all issues that contravened the DDA guidelines were documented.
